A Designer's Answer to a Neglected Corner of the Bathroom Cabinet

Helena Malovec was born in Prague and grew up between the Czech capital and Vienna, where her father kept a workshop full of hand tools and her mother maintained the kind of precise, uncluttered kitchen that seemed to Helena — even as a child — to be a form of design philosophy. She moved to London in 2008 to study industrial design at Central Saint Martins, graduating with a first-class degree and a particular interest in the language of everyday objects: the things people hold in their hands every morning and evening without a second thought.

After graduating, Helena spent six years at a well-regarded British razor and grooming company in North London, where she led product development on a range of precision-engineered shaving instruments. She learned the difference between things that look premium and things that feel premium — and understood that the two are not always the same. More than that, she noticed how the razor category had been refined and refined again by designers and engineers over decades, while the humble toothbrush — an object most people use twice a day, every day of their lives — had been largely left to consumer packaged goods thinking.

Malo Dental London was founded in 2017 from a small studio on Lamb's Conduit Street in Bloomsbury, WC1. The name is a compression: "malo" from Helena's surname, Malovec, and a quiet nod to the Czech word for "small" — because Helena's conviction from the beginning was that small, independent brands could move faster, care more, and make more considered decisions about materials and production than the large conglomerates that had long dominated the category.

The materials philosophy at Malo is straightforward: choose brass for longevity and weight, bamboo for renewability and compostability, and medical-grade silicone for durability and manufacturing precision. None of these are marketing claims; they are engineering choices made for practical and environmental reasons. The Bloomsbury Sonic Electric Toothbrush handle, for example, uses an aluminium chassis machined in Birmingham — heavier and more expensive than injection-moulded plastic, but designed to last years rather than months, with a replaceable head that reduces waste at the point of disposal.

Production has remained deliberately small-batch since the brand's founding. Malo works with a network of specialist UK and European manufacturers — a copper fabricator in the West Midlands, a bamboo supplier certified to FSC standards, a cosmetics chemist in Nottinghamshire — and keeps close oversight of each step. The result is not always the cheapest option in the category, but it is one of the most considered.

Since 2017, Malo has grown to serve more than 74,000 customers across 38 countries, shipping from the Bloomsbury studio via Royal Mail and DHL. The brand has been featured in Monocle, Wallpaper*, and Kinfolk, and was named an independent brand to watch by The Guardian's lifestyle desk in 2022. Helena still runs the studio from Lamb's Conduit Street, still designs every product, and still insists that the bathroom cabinet is worth taking seriously.

The Right Way to Pack a Toothbrush for Travel

Most toothbrush travel cases do more harm than good. We look at ventilation, material compatibility, and how our Travel Hygiene Kit was designed to solve all of this with one small recycled cotton pouch.

Why We Chose Bamboo Over Bioplastic

Bioplastic sounds like progress, but the composting infrastructure it requires rarely exists where consumers actually live. We explain why moso bamboo — properly sourced and certified — remains the more honest choice for a toothbrush handle.

A Brief History of the Tongue Scraper

Used across South Asia, ancient Rome, and Tudor England — the tongue scraper is older than the toothbrush. We trace its material journey from bone and ivory through silver and into the contemporary copper designs we produce today in the West Midlands.

From Our Community

★★★★★

"I've been through dozens of electric toothbrushes and the Bloomsbury is the first one that doesn't feel like a toy. The aluminium handle has real weight to it, and three years on it still looks exactly as it did on day one. The replaceable head system is also genuinely cleverer than anything else I've tried — no wasteful whole-handle replacement when the brush wears out."

"Switched to the Bamboo Manual Brush about eight months ago and genuinely haven't looked back. The bristle density is perfect — firm enough to feel like it's doing something, soft enough that it doesn't feel harsh. What I appreciate most is that when I'm done with a brush I can put the handle straight in my compost. No guilt, no faff. Bought a four-pack for the whole family."

"I ordered the Travel Hygiene Kit before a three-week trip and it was one of the best small purchases I've made. The recycled cotton pouch is thoughtful — it actually ventilates, unlike every rigid plastic case I've owned. The mini toothpaste in the Fennel & Anise variant is unusual and lovely. Bought two more kits as gifts when I got home."
